One of the most regal perhaps of all flowers, “The Rose” was the title of a Bette Midler song. This original artwork incorporates a verse of that song.
Using a calligraphy pen, the tip of the pen was carefully dipped into an original color mix of guache paint, which is similar to tempera paint. Each color mix had its own turn to flow and blend in order to create subtle color shifts within one letter or one word.
The goal was to keep the transitions visible to those who look carefully.
The artwork was created on grey archival pastel paper and the rose itself was done in professional chalk pastel with each stroke of a particular shade of pink or rose either placed side by side or layered onto each other, giving the illusion of a three-dimensional perfect rose.
The verse is a message of hope, not despair, through the hard times of our lives and to stay strong as one looks to better times.
