Unusual and graceful spikes form the centerpiece of this striking necklace. These spikes are made with a somewhat rare gem known as bloodstone or heliotrope. An ancient gem, bloodstone was considered to give the wearer superhuman stamina, courage, and agility. It is believed to be good for the circulatory system. The ancient Babylonians made amulets out of this stone. During the Middle Ages, it was used in cathedral sculptures, representing the blood of Christ. Bloodstone is found in India, Brazil, and China to name a few countries.
Within this necklace, there are two styles of New Mexican Sonoran glass – round green discs with random black lines on the surface as well as two clusters of three clear and green glass beads for added interest and a variety of shapes. The connecting black beads are onyx.
The name onyx is from the Greek word for claw or fingernail because of the shapes of white parallel bands often found in black onyx. It is considered to be a protective stone. Roman soldiers wore amulets of onyx into battle for added courage. An interesting fact is that during the Middle Ages in England, midwives would place a piece of onyx between the breasts of women giving birth to ease childbirth.
