Description

Seven large and unique carnelian nuggets of varying colors, ranging from orange to grey to white, provide the showstopper element for this necklace. The other smaller beads make up a rich variety of shapes and color, using horn, tigers eye the faceted round beads), and shades of orange carnelian.
The name “carnelian” is believed to come from the Kornel, a type of orange cherry. The finest carnelian is found in India, but most carnelian on the market is from Brazill and Uruguay.
Many people in the Middle East consider carnelian to be one of the “stones of the kings”. In Egypt carnelian was placed on mummies to help them with their journey. Pharaohs wore carnelian to denote high rank and status and in the Middle Ages alchemists boiled it to supposedly release the energy of other stones. In China a tiger is considered to be the real king of the jungle. Tigers eye is thought to be a powerful symbol of protection, power, and good fortune.
“Horn” in jewelry refers to the horns of water buffalo, which are bred for the food industry in Asia. The horns are a byproduct. As a sign of respect to the buffalo, nothing of the creature is wasted.

Carnelian With Tigers Eye And Horn

$75.00

Ornate sterling silver emphasizes three distinct stones which combine to make a striking pendant. Green tourmaline with tiny slivers of black embedded naturally in this stone, begins a cascade of these three. Malachite, bright green showing the telltale bands of dark and light green, takes up the middle and then is followed by a teardrop shape of shiny black onyx. The “chain” of beads that complete this necklace is made up primarily of malachite in various shapes and sizes, set off by a variety of small onyx beads, and seed beads and finished by round black freshwater pearls.

Malachite, like so many stones, can be traced all the way back to Egypt as early as 3000 BC. Malachite was also used in the Greek and Roman empires, partly for jewelry but also ground up and used for eye shadow. In the Middle Ages malachite supposedly protected people from the evil eye and the Russian czars paneled their castles with malachite and used it for decorative inlay work. Malachite is believed to ward off danger, fight illness, and lead to creativity and confidence. The main source of malachite today is in Zaire, but it is also found in Australia, Chile, South Africa, and the U.S.A.
