A stunning Mexican ebony pendant, cut with long facets at a diagonal, is the showpiece for this black and white necklace. Elongated barrels of marbled ebony are interspersed with snowflake obsidian. Smooth sterling silver beads add a glimmer to this necklace.
Obsidian, known in Ancient Mexico as Itzli, the God of Stone, is also sometimes known as ebony. It is found wherever there is a volcanic eruption and rapid cooling. Obsidian is believed to have been found by a Roman named Obsias, who found it in Ethiopia.
The Aztecs used it for axes and knives as it is harder than steel and fractures smoothly like glass, creating a sharp edge. The Mayans used polished pieces of it as a mirror to aid in predicting the future.
Snowflake obsidian is also found near volcanos. Mexico, the USA, and Iceland all have deposits of snowflake obsidian. Some deposits have been dated at over 2.5 million years old. The lighter parts of the stone are quartz crystals. some believe that snowflake obsidian encourages perseverance, insight, past-life recall, and spirit communication.
