Summertime Shells

Seashells are blessings from the earth. No two exactly the same, the shells represent our links to the ocean. They are resilient and some have survived for thousands of years. Shells first appeared on Earth 520 million years ago. A mere 120,000 years ago humans made their first necklaces, and they were made from stringing shells, much like this necklace. A virtual parade of patterns and unique shapes, shells have been depicted in art and incorporated into most of the major religions on Earth.

Some people believe that shells offer protection against evil spirits. Others believe that shells are a bridge between the physical and the supernatural realms. Ancient Egyptians buried their dead with seashells, believing that they would aid in the journey into the afterlife. For most of us, shells bring forth memories of happiness and peaceful times.
