Teal Fresh Water Pearls With Onyx

Teal green freshwater pearls are very difficult to find in the present-day gem marketplace. The pendant and all-black beads of varying sizes and shapes are all onyx. The earrings have three 3” strands hanging down, which give a chandelier effect, and are attached with unique Adolphina silver wirework.

Freshwater pearls are harvested by people who implant a tiny particle from a freshwater clam or mollusk’s mantle, which stimulates the growth of a freshwater pearl. Up to two dozen pearls can be grown at one time inside one shell. Most are harvested in China. This process can take as long as two to seven years. Freshwater pearls are said to encourage harmony, humility, and purity.

Onyx, used long ago by sorcerers in the Middle East, was also worn as carved amulets by Roman soldiers for protection. According to myth, Cupid trimmed the nails of the sleeping goddess Venus. The Fates turned those clippings into stone to prevent even a part of Venus from dying. Those clippings became onyx. This stone is also associated with regeneration and new beginnings.
